Herpes zoster is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Even without the appearance of typical blisters, patients may experience a range of symptoms. These symptoms may include pain, itching, burning, or numbness, and usually occur along one side of the body without visible blisters.
In the early or mild stages of shingles, patients may first experience pain or discomfort, which can be dull, stinging, or burning. This pain may be present on the skin, but there may be no obvious rash or blisters. Patients may experience increased sensitivity of the local skin or the appearance of erythema, but these changes are not obvious and are easily overlooked. If the symptoms progress further, mild erythema or small blisters may appear, but these changes may be subtle, especially in milder cases.
Symptoms of shingles can vary from person to person and can differ at different stages. Even without visible blisters, patients may experience persistent pain or discomfort that may be aggravated by touch or slight pressure. This pain can last for weeks or months, and may even persist after the rash has disappeared; this condition is known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Even without visible blisters, if persistent pain or other unusual sensations occur, medical attention should be sought promptly for early diagnosis and treatment.
